I’m not really sure what to make of this one. Anna Kairos (not her real name, the ‘Kairos’ alludes to Greek mythology) is a young German (Berlin-based) singer-songwriter whose previous work revealed a propensity to plant extravagant, almost orchestral piano pieces into pop songs quite effortlessly. Her style was definitely unique, and very attractive.
With this latest single, which will appear on a long-anticipated album later this year, she has gone off in a different direction completely, with a highly rhythmic song but one which lacks any sort of melody and which merely repeats the same theme for all of its one minute and 52 seconds. It is unlike anything she has recorded before. And that’s from an artist who became known when she burst onto the scene for recording songs unlikeF anyone else.
‘Experimental’ is hardly an adequate adjective to describe it. Will this be the format for the album or will she return to her previous ways? Or some form of middle ground?
