I’ve been meaning to write a few words on Swedish project Roy for a while, as I’ve enjoyed all 4 tracks that have been released so far this year - a series of songs that are a precursor to an album release planned in Autumn. The musician behind the project is Viktor Hansson, who’s been involved in bands such as Holy Family (not to be confused with excellent British band The Holy Family) and jimmyangel, and in this solo venture he’s created an interesting sound that struck me as being a little different to the norm, gentle handcrafted indie pop that has a lilting, quirky feel. He’s released 2 songs in March and ‘En annan plats’ is the highlight of the two, led by piano with a playful melody. The notes that accompany the track suggest a blend of ‘70s sun drenched California, but with a measure of Swedish west coast darkness’, and I absolutely get that mix, but there is a different sensibility in my favourite of his releases from earlier this year ‘En bättre dag’ (A better day, Jehovah’s Witnesses and Telemarketers’), which conjures up images of a smoky piano lounge, yet with a lyrical and melodic feel closer to The Divine Comedy in their more serene moments. The lyrics are in Swedish, so I’m guessing somewhat on their exact meaning, but I’ve enjoyed this intelligently written pop music.
